Qualification Addendum A: Winning Records

Preface: we have not made it more difficult to qualify for The Online Championships. If you’re already qualified through the current criteria, rest easy. This post is not for you.

First, a Quick Recap

One way to qualify for our Online Championships by having two winning records in your debate event throughout the season. Students that have only a single winning record would have to attend The Online Qualifiers (and get another winning record at that tournament) to qualify.

The Additional Criteria

We’ve had a few questions from students in this situation whose standardized tests and/or AP exams have been rescheduled for dates that coincide with our online qualifiers. To help students in this difficult situation, we have added an additional criterion for winning records.

If you are unable to attend the online qualifier due to a significant scheduling conflict or other significant hardship, a winning record from Ziggy’s April Tournament can stand as one of the two winning records required for Championship Qualification. You must email us and explain why you are unable to attend the qualifier if you want approval through this criteria.

Let’s Illustrate.

a) Austin went 5-1 at an NCFCA Qualifier. He went 4-2 at the April Ziggy Tournament. While Austin was planning to attend The Online Qualifier, his AP tests were scheduled at the same time as several of his prelim rounds. Since Austin now cannot attend the qualifier, his winning record from Ziggy’s April Tournament can count as his second winning record. Austin is qualified for The Online Championship.

b) Valarie didn’t get any winning records throughout the NCFCA season but got winning a winning record at two Ziggy Tournaments, one of them being the April Tournament. Valarie is not qualified for the Online Championship. Only results from the Ziggy’s April Tournament can count towards qualifications. Valarie must attend the Online Qualifier and get a winning record to be qualified for the Online Championship.

c) Matthew went 5-1 at an NCFCA Qualifier. He went 4-2 at the April Ziggy Tournament. While Matthew can attend The Online Qualifier, he decides not to. Matthew is not qualified for The Online Championship. His winning record from the April tournament would only apply if he was unable to attend The Online Qualifier. Matthew must attend the Online Qualifier and get a winning record to be qualified for the Online Championship.
